The Marvelous Marvels on Marvel TV

April 24, 2021 by Bill McCormick

Falcon and the Winter Soldier just completed its debut season following on the heels of Wandavision. The two shows couldn’t have been more different. The latter was a deep dive into a disturbed, and powerful, mind that’s trying to come to grips with the loss of a loved one. The show used classic sitcoms as the frame for Wanda’s torment. Falcon and the Winter Soldier, on the other hand, decided to tackle racism and social inequities head on with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the face. Prepare To Max Out Your Credit Cards

January 2, 2020 by Bill McCormick

Up, Up, and Away!

Once upon a time, comic book fans were lucky to get a super powered movie a couple of times a decade. Now, with there being super properties on eight television networks (as of now), and in theaters monthly, those long gone days seem innocent and sweet now. What doesn’t seem so innocent are some of the plot lines. Comic book fans have gotten older and want stories that appeal to them. One example is Archie and the gang are now in a sexy thriller called Riverdale. That said, comic book companies are increasing the number of titles aimed at kids to keep the fandom moving from generation to generation. DC has multiple iterations of every superhero so anyone, from the youngest toddler to the oldest geriatric can relate to a version. In an alternate multiverse, I can attest that there are people who have bought my entirely NSFW characters as images on onesies for infants. Why do they do this? I haven’t got a clue. The point is, we have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to hero related properties and people are buying them. [Read more…] about Prepare To Max Out Your Credit Cards

Controversy

August 29, 2019 by Bill McCormick

Tempests in teapots
The things that set people off into ALL CAPS rages continues to amaze me. From pumpkin spice anything to the colors of the new line of Hyundai’s. Now, if they made pumpkin spiced Hyundai’s then I could understand. Nah, I still wouldn’t care. Even so, high dudgeon appears to be attainable via the slightest provocation. And never is that more true than in the world of superheroes. What? You thought I was going to dive into politics? Sorry buddy, I gave up low hanging fruit when I dumped all my Florida stories. From Ben Affleck ruining Batman for all, he didn’t, to Gal Gadot not being American, neither was Wonder Woman, to Robert Downey Jr. being a horrible actor, he’s not, to Black Panther being a waste of white people’s money, it wasn’t, etc. On and on it goes. This will ruin civilization, or that will destroy all human morals, or something even more dire. None of the arguments have any validity when looked at logically, but people keep making them.

Isn’t This Super?

May 24, 2019 by Bill McCormick

They’re recruiting them young these days.

Thanks to the internet we know some things to be true. Specifically that Ben Affleck has been fired, or quit, and is no longer Batman. Except for the fact that he is, and is scheduled to appear in the next Justice League. We’ll get to why that is in a few. Other things we know is that Chris Hemsworth will never play Thor again. Except in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. And maybe in another Marvel film. There are no plans for a stand-alone Thor film, but that could be changed before my diaper. Suffice it to say there’s a lot of bad information out there. And, thanks to people needing to fill in blank spots with their burbling thoughts, it’s only going to get worse. There are, as of this typing, eight Marvel, and two Sony, movies slated for release with no information attached to them. Now, obviously, one will be a sequel to Venom. It made stupid money and, thanks to people like me who want to see it again, is doing steady biz as a download. The other Sony flik will probably be Morbius. It’s dark, has room for gratuitous violence and sex, and is a movie designed to make everyone who hated Twilight happy. That’s a potential fan base of billions. [Read more…] about Isn’t This Super?

The Holiday Movie Special

December 17, 2018 by Bill McCormick

They’re not Ho Ho Hoes

Back in 2012 I wrote a fun little blog about Holiday films everyone needed to see. Most people will point you to the classics like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, a fun story which reminds children that they’re all useless and will be shunned until they provide a service to their overlords, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, which seems like a pedophile’s wet dream today but was actually very sweet when it was first released (and is still a personal fave of mine since I’m not a pervert – well, not that kind of pervert), Frosty the Snowman, a fun story that reminds kids how much fun it can be to hop a freight train with a stranger, and, of course, A Christmas Story, the first holiday special to ever feature bad lingerie and guns. Certainly there are others, from It’s a Wonderful Life to Die Hard there are plenty of movies for the older viewers who need chronic depression and death with their holiday.
