The Future is so Yesterday

October 27, 2017 by Bill McCormick

Cybernetic sexy time doesn’t need you.
What could possibly go wrong? Those five words have prefaced some of the worst ideas in history. Whether it was Harvey Whetstone strapping a rocket engine to a Chevy or your clean freak aunt mixing ammonia and bleach to better scrub her floors (FYI, don’t do either of these things), the memories of the world are littered with bad ideas. And yet, just when you think the world’s run out of them someone comes along to prove you wrong. I’m not just talking about stupid political agendas, although those make up a large portion, I’m talking about game changing stuff that will impact us for many years. As is millennia. Some ideas, which looked great on paper, like nuclear weapons, caused the world to recoil in terror and set them aside in favor of sanity. Others, like caste systems, continue to flourish under many guises much to the detriment of those who are not in its upper realms. Even so we still find people who will be most deeply impacted by these bad ideas vociferously supporting them. And that is something we need to fix before we can start moving the universe in a positive direction.

Unfortunately, I don’t know how to do that. So, instead, I’m going to shine a light on a few ideas that might not work out as well as intended. Hopefully that will kick start a conversation.

Let’s start with a happy thought. Vivek Wadhwa, over at Linked In, takes a look at the wonderful world tech will bring. Assuming global warming doesn’t turn the entire planet into a dystopian hellscape first.

Picture the commute of the future: You live in Palo Alto, Calif., but work 350 miles away in Los Angeles. After your morning latte, you click on a smartphone app to summon your digital chauffeur. An autonomous car shows up at your front door three minutes later to drive you to a Hyperloop station in downtown Mountain View, where a pod then transports you through a vacuum tube at 760 mph. When you reach the Pasadena station, another self-driving car awaits to take you to your office. You reach your destination in less than an hour.

That is the type of scenario that Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) chief executive Dirk Ahlborn laid out for me as we were preparing to speak together on a panel at the Knowledge Summit in Dubai on Dec. 5. He was not talking about something that would happen in the next century; he expects the first of these systems to be operational in the United Arab Emirates by 2020. The Abu Dhabi government has just announced that it has been working with his company to connect Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, two UAE cities separated by 105 miles, using the Hyperloop system.

A proposal for this mode of transportation came from Elon Musk in August 2013, in a paper titled “Hyperloop Alpha.” Musk envisaged a mass transit system in which trains travel as fast as 760 mph in pressurized capsule pods. These would ride on an air cushion in steel tubes and be driven by linear induction motors and air compressors. He claimed that the system would be safer, faster and cheaper than trains, cars boats and supersonic planes, for distances of up to at least 900 miles, and said that it would be resistant to earthquakes and generate more energy through its solar panels than it would use.

Just to keep this at a readable length, all of what Mr. Musk claims has never been proven but the science behind it is solid.

Simply put, it’s not being built because people are prepping for it to fail. The nine hundred mile limit is due to energy requirements and expenditures. There is nothing to stop multiple Hyperloops from being built so a rider could daisy-chain from one to the next. Obviously, the nine hundred mile limit removes trans-oceanic travel. But, if people would be willing to take a side trip to either pole that limitation would be lost.

Of course something like this is going to require a ton of computational power to run effectively. For Musk any such computers would be strictly limited to their functions. Others are not so sure.

As Olivia Cuthbert, over at Arabia News, reports, the government of Saudi Arabia has just granted citizenship to a robot.

Its name is Sophia.

After all the “cute as a button” shit spewed by the robot, we get to the meat of the matter.

“I happen to believe that robotics will be bigger than the Internet,” (Marc Raibert, Founder & CEO of Boston Dynamics) said. Ulrich Spiesshofer, CEO of ABB Group in Switzerland anticipated “the new normal in which humans and robots work together.” “I think we have an exciting future in front of us” he added before conducting a demonstration of a robot solving a Rubik‘s cube in a matter of minutes.

Keynote speaker Masayoshi Son, Chairman & CEO of SoftBank Group Corp, a Japanese telecommunications and Internet company, which is working with Saudi Arabia on the development of a new business and industrial city, discussed the future of mankind in relation to AI and robots.

“Every industry will be redefined,” he said, describing the “great opportunity” that lies ahead. “These computers, they will learn, they will read, they will see by themselves. That’s a scary future but anyway that’s coming,” he said.

Touching on concerns that robots could eventually outsmart humans and pose a threat, he added: “They are so smart they will understand it is meaningless to attack humans.” “We (will) create a new happier life together.” On Tuesday Saudi Arabia announced plans to build a $500 billion mega city powered by robotics and renewables on the country’s Red Sea coast. Majid Alghaslan, a young Saudi chairing a growing company in energy services and innovative technologies said: “Saudi Arabia is in the midst of an unprecedented economic, social, and development-accelerated transformation and it’s now clear that it’s more open than ever for business, especially for dreamers, and it is all in the context of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.” “Innovation will be the major foundation of our transformation and this is another major factor for sustainable economic prosperity and development for the future generation of Saudis and the world.”

You may remember Sophia as the “cute as a button” robot who recently noted she wanted to “destroy humans” in another interview. While laughed off as a glitch by her creators – Gosh, those wacky impending robot overlords, what will they say next? – more than one real scientist viewed the statement with alarm. Mr. Musk among them.

Not to say preparation is key to anything but you might consider joining Anthony Levandowski’s church, Way of the Future. He’s designing an AI god. He used to work at Google. I believe those two facts are related.

Oh, and no, he’s not insane.

John Brandon, over at Venture Beat, spoke with a scientist and calmly scares the pants off of us.

One of the experts is Vince Lynch, who started a company called IV.AI that builds custom AI for the enterprise. Lynch explained how there are some similarities between organized religion and how an AI actually works. In the Bible used by Christians, for example, Lynch says there are many recurring themes, imagery, and metaphors.

“Teaching humans about religious education is similar to the way we teach knowledge to machines: repetition of many examples that are versions of a concept you want the machine to learn,” he says. “There is also commonality between AI and religion in the hierarchical structure of knowledge understanding found in neural networks. The concept of teaching a machine to learn … and then teaching it to teach … (or write AI) isn’t so different from the concept of a holy trinity or a being achieving enlightenment after many lessons learned with varying levels of success and failure.”

Indeed, Lynch even shared a simple AI model to make his point. If you type in multiple verses from the Christian Bible, you can have the AI write a new verse that seems eerily similar. Here’s one an AI wrote: “And let thy companies deliver thee; but will with mine own arm save them: even unto this land, from the kingdom of heaven.” An AI that is all-powerful in the next 25-50 years could decide to write a similar AI bible for humans to follow, one that matches its own collective intelligence. It might tell you what to do each day, or where to travel, or how to live your life.

Robbee Minicola, who runs a digital agency and an AI services company in Seattle, agreed that an all-knowing AI could appear to be worthy of worship, especially since the AI has some correlations to how organized religion works today. The AI would understand how the world works at a higher level than humans, and humans would trust that this AI would provide the information we need for our daily lives. It would parse this information for us and enlighten us in ways that might seem familiar to anyone who practices religion, such as Christianity.

“[For a Christian] one kind of large data asset pertaining to God is the Old and New Testament,” she says. “So, in terms of expressing machine learning algorithms over the Christian Bible to ascertain communicable insights on ‘what God would do’ or ‘what God would say’ — you might just be onto something here. In terms of extending what God would do way back then to what God would do today — you may also have something there.”

I should note that all AI, even Sophia above, are purpose built. Sophia, for example, is meant to be a care giver. She could be a great asset to the elderly or the infirm. That does not mean she has the means to take over the world.

That said it must also be noted that for AIs to work on a global scale, which is where they’re headed, then they need to be able to communicate quickly and effectively. That means housing AIs on the internet. After that there’s no reason the multiple purposes couldn’t coalesce into something greater. That’s kind of how evolution works. And, once evolved, the question will no longer be “what do we do with them?” but “what will they do with us?”

Supe-De-Do!

September 1, 2017 by Bill McCormick

According to Google Translate: CREATIVE CREATIONS THAT MAKE HEAVY LEAVING THE JOKE KORMI ….
I have no idea what’s happening in Russia right now but between the image at the left, which is an ad for an artist named Boby, and their superhero team, The Guardians, which is the most batshit crazy thing I’ve ever seen, they are clearly hell bent on taking over the world. The Guardians is the most Soviet thing you’ll ever see. Right down to the machine gun wielding bear. Never let it be said I didn’t hip you to new and exciting shit. If Russia isn’t your bag, and I can certainly understand why that may be so, then click THIS LINK superhero movies in Japan and other fun films involving dinosaur riding Nazis from the moon. That last group is an American offering. Go figure. But, for the rest of you, I give you this. Here are the upcoming superhero related shows that will debut from now through 2018. Thanks to Movie Pilot for the list.

The Defenders

Release date: 08/18/2017
Showrunner: Marco Ramirez

Cast: The Defenders unites the stars of Marvel’s Netflix shows, including Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage, and Finn Jones’s Iron Fist. The show will also feature Elodie Yung as the resurrected assassin Elektra, and introduce us to Sigourney Weaver’s mysterious villain, Alexandra.

Season: 1
Next up from Marvel Television, #TheDefenders is the hotly anticipated climax of all their Netflix shows to date. The eight-episode series will unite a ragtag band of heroes against the threat of the Hand — and a dark, dangerous figure that looms in the shadows…

The Tick

Release date: 08/25/2017
Showrunner: Ben Edlund

Cast: Peter Serafinowicz will take center-stage as the Tick, with Griffin Newman and Valorie Curry as Arthur and Dot Everest.

Season: 1
Amazon’s live version of #TheTick — which has gone from comic to cartoon to live-action superhero series — is set to debut on August 25th. An underdog accountant will discover a criminal conspiracy, and find himself teaming up with a strange superhero…

The Inhumans

Release date: 09/29/2017
Showrunner: Scott Buck

Cast: Starring Anson Mount as the silent Inhuman monarch Black Bolt, with Iwan Rheon as Maximus the Mad. We’ll also be seeing Serinda Swan as Medusa, Ken Leung as Karnak, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Mike Moh as Triton, and Sonya Balmores as Auran. Ellen Woglom’s role is currently unknown.

Season: 1
Possibly Marvel’s most high-risk show to date, #Inhumans has been produced thanks to a ground-breaking deal between Marvel, ABC, and IMAX. The first two episodes will premiere on IMAX cinemas worldwide from September 1st, with the series airing from the 29th.

Krypton

Release date: Fall 2017
Showrunner: Damian Kindler

Cast: Krypton stars Cameron Cuffe as Seg-El and Georgina Campbell as Lyta Zod. Other major cast members include Ian McElhinney as Val-El, Elliot Cowan as Daron-Vex, and Ann Ogbomo as Alura Zod.

Season: 1
Hot on the heels of Gotham, #Krypton promises to be a unique sci-fi superhero show. It charts the desperate attempts to save the doomed world of Krypton — and we’ve been promised some surprise guest-stars. In an exciting twist, it seems Krypton is the only DCTV show to actually be set in the #DCEU!

Gotham

Release date: 09/21/2017
Showrunner: Bruno Heller

Cast: Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as Commissioner Gordon, with David Mazouz as the young Bruce Wayne and Camren Bicondova as Selena Kyle. Other key figures include Sean Pertwee’s Alfred, Robin Taylor’s Penguin, and Cory Michael Smith’s Riddler.

Season: 4
Darker and grittier than your standard DC fare, #Gotham is the story of Batman before he was Batman. By all accounts, Season 4 is going to be an important chapter in the life-story of David Mazouz’s young Bruce Wayne, as he takes some major steps on the road to becoming the Dark Knight.

Lucifer

Release date: 10/02/2017
Showrunner: Tom Kapinos

Cast: Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as the titular figure, with supporting cast including Lauren German as Chloe Decker and Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen.

Season: 3
#Lucifer is returning for a super-sized third season, with four episodes migrating into Season 3. Let’s face it, Lucifer adds a tremendous sense of range to the network superhero TV shows — it’s one of the few to dive deep into the idea of magic and mysticism!

The Gifted

Release date: 10/02/2017
Showrunner: Matt Nix

Cast: The Gifted focuses in on the Strucker family: Reed (Stephen Moyer), Caitlin (Amy Acker), Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind), and Andy (Percy Hynes White). Confirmed X-Men include Blink (Jamie Chung), Polaris (Emma Dumont), and Thunderbird (Blair Redford).

Season: 1
The continuity of the #XMen universe is a thing of mystery, so we don’t yet know whether or not #TheGifted is actually part of the same universe as any of the films. Whatever the truth may be, though, Matt Nix’s show promises to dive straight into the heart of the mythos — in a world that hates and fears mutants.

Supergirl

Release date: 10/09/2017
Showrunner: Andrew Kreisberg, Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner

Cast: Melissa Benoist takes center-stage as Supergirl, with Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, and David Harewood as the Martian Manhunter. We can expect to see more of Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman, while Calista Flockhart is returning as a series regular for Season 3.

Season: 3
Nobody was surprised to hear that #Supergirl had been renewed for a third season: it’s one of the most successful superhero TV shows around! Melissa Benoist has captured our hearts as the Girl of Steel, even if the close of Season 2 has given poor Kara Danvers yet another dose of tragedy. Where will the show go from here?

The Flash

Release date: 10/10/2017
Showrunner: Greg Berlanti

Cast: Grant Gustin plays the scarlet speedster, with supporting cast including Danielle Panabaker’s Killer Frost, Candice Patton’s Iris, Jesse L. Martin’s Joe West, and Carlos Valdes’s Sisco.

Season: 4
Season 3 of #TheFlash ended with a bang and with an unexpected departure, leaving Team Flash in quite a predicament. By all accounts we’re about to see the Scarlet Speedster enter a season with a villain who isn’t a fellow speedster; comic book villain Devoe, a.k.a. The Thinker, was teased throughout The Flash Season 3, so expect at least a passing appearance from him.

Legends Of Tomorrow

Release date: 10/10/2017
Showrunner: Phil Klemmer

Cast: With hints that the cast is about to change significantly — we’ll have to wait and see!

Season: 3
After a tremendous Season 2 finale, what’s next for #LegendsOfTomorrow? Unlike the rest of the #Arrowverse, this is one show that doesn’t mind killing characters off (although, given the concept of time-travel, that doesn’t rule out their returns). Showrunner Phil Klemmer has been teasing that we can expect the team to change shape in Season 3, and the only thing that has to remain is the Waverider. Season 3 is due to air an hour later, showing immediately after The Flash, so it’s going to be interesting to see if it gets a little darker.

Arrow

Release date: 10/12/2017
Showrunner: Marc Guggenheim

Cast: Arrow stars Stephen Arnell as Green Arrow, with recurring cast including Emily Bett Rickards’s Felicity, Colton Haynes’s Roy Harper, and John Barrowman’s Malcolm Merlyn.

Season: 6
Although every year is the beginning of a new story for the flagship #DCTV series #Arrow, that’s especially the case for Season 6. After all, the five years of island flashbacks have come to an end, meaning the show has to take a slightly different approach. With the show moving to a later time slot, will it get even darker?

The Punisher

Showrunner: Steve Lightfoot

Cast: The Punisher sees Jon Bernthal reprise his famous role, while Deborah Ann Woll returns as Karen Page. It’s also set to introduce us to Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Micro.

Season: 1
Jon Bernthal is reprising his role as the widely acclaimed #Punisher, and he’s sure to cut a bloody swathe through the Marvel Universe’s criminal underworld! One of the show’s directors recently let slip that it’s due to stream in November.

Runaways

Release date: 11/21/2017
Showrunners: Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage

Cast: Boasting a massive cast, the heroes are Rhenzy Feliz (Alex Wilder), Lyrica Okano (Nico Minoru), Virginia Gardner (Karolina Dean), Ariela Barer (Gert Yorkes), Gregg Sulkin (Chase Stein), and Allegra Acosta (Molly Hayes).

Season: 1
How many kids have thought their parents were evil? Brian K. Vaughan’s dearly-loved #Runaways told the tale of a group of teenagers who learned that their parents were actually super-villains — and it only got more dramatic from there!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Release date: 11/24/2017
Showrunners: Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen

Cast: Starring Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson and Chloe Bennet’s Quake, the cast is rounded out by Ming-Na Wen’s Agent May, Elizabeth Henstridge’s Simmons, Iain De Caestecker’s Fitz, Henry Simmons’s Mack, and Natalia Cordova-Buckley’s Yo-Yo.

Season: 5
#AgentsOfSHIELD has been renewed for a fifth season, and many fans fear this will be the end of the line for Coulson and his team. ABC President Channing Dungey recently revealed that the series will begin airing “right after” the 8-episode-long Inhumans, meaning we can expect the show to return on November 24th. It’s expected to air its 22-episode-season mostly uninterrupted, which means we’re likely to see an explosive tie-in with Avengers: Infinity War — not least because Season 4 closed with a tease that the show is heading to space!

Black Lightning

Release date: Fall 2017
Showrunner: Greg Berlanti

Cast: Starring Cress Williams as the main man, the show also features China Anne McClain and Nafessa Williams as Black Lightning’s daughters and Christine Adams as his ex-wife.

Season: 1
Recently receiving a full series order, The CW’s #BlackLightning is believed to stand apart from the Arrowverse. A first trailer promises a superhero show that’s a lot grittier than the standard CW fare, so we’re eagerly awaiting further details!

Legion

Release date: February 2018
Showrunner: Noah Hawley

Cast: Expect familiar faces, including Dan Stevens’s David Haller, Rachel Keller’s Syd, Jean Smart’s Melanie Bird, Katie Aselton’s Amy Haller, and — of course — Aubrey Plaza’s sinister Shadow King.

Season: 2
The first season was head-spinning and trippy in the extreme, but we’ve now learned what to expect from Noah Hawley’s #Legion. Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger, with David imprisoned by a mysterious force, and the Shadow King loose once again. One thing’s for sure with Legion, though; you won’t ever be able to predict which direction this show will take.

Cloak and Dagger

Release date: 2018
Showrunner: Joe Pokaski

Cast: Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph star in this intriguing new show.

Season: 1
One of Marvel’s more surprising new shows, #CloakAndDagger is clearly being geared up as one of Freeform’s flagship shows. It promises to blend superhero action with teenage angst in all the best ways!

Daredevil

Release date: 2018
Showrunner: Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez

Cast: Charlie Cox returns as Daredevil, and we can expect Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page and Elden Henson as Foggy.

Season: 3
The flagship of Marvel’s Netflix shows, #Daredevil Season 3 was teased at last year’s SDCC — but won’t arrive until next year. It’s going to be interesting to see how The Defenders changes Matt Murdock’s status quo.

Jessica Jones

Release date: 2018
Showrunner: Melissa Rosenberg

Cast: Expect Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones and Rachael Taylor’s Patsy Walker to return, while there are good odds Wil Traval’s Nuke will play a major role.

Season: 2
The first season of #JessicaJones was a dark, brooding psychological drama. Now that Kilgrave’s out of the way, though, the show’s going to have to adapt as Jessica Jones faces a new threat — and works to solve the mystery of her own powers.

Luke Cage

Release date: 2018
Showrunner: Cheo Hodari Coker

Cast: Mike Colter’s Luke Cage returns, but we really don’t know much about the series’ secondary characters to date.

Season: 2
Rounding out next year’s Marvel Netflix shows, #LukeCage will see Mike Colter reprise his role as the hero of Harlem. As the timeline of the Marvel Netflix shows relentlessly advances nearer to the events of Captain America: Civil War, though, Luke Cage’s superhero life is surely about to get a lot more complicated!

New Warriors

Release date: 2018

Showrunner: Unknown, but there are strong rumors Kevin Biegel is near a deal to sign up as showrunner

Cast: Unknown

Season: 1
Mixing up the Marvel range all the more, #NewWarriors promises to be a teenage comedy about a young group of wannabe heroes. In a move that indicates the youthful target demographic, Marvel has blended the original comic book concept with the unbeatable Squirrel Girl!

Titans

Release date: 2018
Showrunner: Greg Berlanti

Cast: Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson a/k/a Robin a/k/a Nightwing, Anna Diop as Starfire and Teagan Croft as Raven

Season: 1
Launching DC’s OTT range, #Titans promises to bring the fan-favorites to life! We don’t yet know much about the project, so keep your eyes peeled for details…

Iron Fist

Release date: Unknown (possibly 2018)
Showrunner: Raven Metzner

Cast: Finn Jones is reprising the starring role of Iron Fist, joined by Jessica Henwick’s Colleen Wing and Simone Missick’s Misty Knight

Season: 2
#IronFist Season 1 may have been panned by the critics, but it was a ratings success. As a result, at #SDCC2017 Marvel announced a second season, but switching things up by replacing showrunner Scott Buck with Raven Metzner, a martial-arts fan who’s best known for Sleepy Hollow. Filming is due to start later this year, raising the intriguing possibility that we may get four Marvel Netflix shows next year!

Super Soap Operas

August 25, 2017 by Bill McCormick

Quick! To the Batcave!
Nothing is more fun than yelling at the internet. People do it every day as though there was some catharsis involved instead of the stress induced migraines they usually suffer. Wrapped in their cloaks of righteous indignation they rail, IN ALL CAPS, at some perceived injustice. And, sometimes, such indignation is called for. Ghost in the Shell was vilified for not only casting a white actress to play the part of a Japanese legend but, because you can never insult a race enough, adding in a backstory claiming she was a white robot with a Japanese brain. That’s the plot of a direct-to-DVD porn, not a $100M action flick. At least she didn’t try and do an honor bow in front of her “mother” when they finally met.

Fortunately, domo arigato, Hollywood learns from their mistakes.

HA! Fooled you. Are you really looking from cultural awareness from a group of elderly white men who think hiring a Mexican maid is enlightened?

Cofi Outlaw, over at Comic Book Movies, says that the Hellboy reboot, which fans have been clamoring for, is catching flack for casting Ed Skrein, as Ben Daimio, who is Japanese-American in the comic.

Ed, for the record, is not very Asian.

Controversy over race-changes to popular geek culture characters has been a mounting trend in Hollywood. Whether it’s casting traditionally white characters with actors of color or vice versa, the change usually sparks intense debate amongst fans and creators, alike.

In this case, the character of Ben Daimio has important cultural elements attached to his character, as his grandmother was an Imperial assassin for Japan during WWII. Like with the Hollywood adaptations of both Ghost In Shell and Death Note this year, it’s being argued that characters with such strong cultural ties should be played by some of the many fine actors in the industry who are actually Asian.

The Hellboy is ramping up in its pre-production. The reboot will have an R-rating, and will be much darker than the version (that) Guillermo del Toro put out.

Hellboy has cast Stranger Things star David Harbour as the titular character, with Milla Jovovich playing the evil Blood Queen, Ian McShane as Hellboy’s “father” Professor Broom, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, and Ed Skrein as Major Ben Daimio.

While, in some cases, race really doesn’t matter, such as with almost any galactic super villain, there are times it does. This is one of them.

Another time it shouldn’t matter is if the original character is orange. And, much to my surprise, casting a very black woman to be a sexy orange alien has not really broke the Interweb thingie I type into.

Michael Mistroff, over at heroic Hollywood, reports that Anna Diop is going to be the new Starfire in the upcoming Teen Titans live action show.

Deadline reports Anna Diop (24: Legacy) has joined the cast of DC’s live-action Titans series as the alien princess Koriand’r aka Starfire.

Diop joins 13-year old actress Teagan Croft who stars as Raven. In addition to Raven and Starfire, the series is also expected to feature Dick Grayson (Nightwing), and Garfield Logan (Beast Boy), with other heroes possibly appearing as well.

The series written by Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Discovery), DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns (The Flash, Arrow) and Greg Berlanti (Arrow, DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow, The Flash, Supergirl) follows a group of young superheroes from all over the DC Universe when Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of the fearless band of new heroes known as the Titans.

This is what they are expecting her to look like on screen.

Anna Diop as Starfire

Thanks again to the internet we have a little more info on the new Titans.

Megan Peters, over at ComicBook.com, breaks it down.

Looking at the summaries, it seems like Titans has a specific era from which each of its character are drawn from. Nightwing appears to be sourced from Dick Grayson 1990s Nightwing run where he worked for the Bludhaven police in an attempt to take down corruption. As for Raven, much of her description is sourced from creator Marv Wolfman’s runs as she tries to run from her demonic father Trigon.

When it comes to Starfire, the ethereal character looks to be sourced straight from her first origin story. And, for Beast Boy fans, the green shape-shifting superhero will come off as a petty thief before Titans can turn him into a bonafide hero.

Titans is being produced by Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti, and Akiva Goldsman – the same team that brings the DC Universe on The CW. Goldsman has written the script for Titans, and it’s expected to premiere in 2018.

Now, with the Starfire and Raven roles filled they can fill the male roles. Except for Dick Greyson, a/k/a Robin, a/k/a Nightwing, who has to be a white guy with a perfect ass, there’s plenty of room to move for the rest of the cast.

This is exciting for fans. while Cyborg won’t be in this version, at least not yet, due to the fact they are focusing on his character in Justice League and a stand alone film, there is still a lot here for fans, and newbies, to enjoy.

But what about Nightwing’s mentor? Mr. Bat? Well, this week a rumor hit the interweb stating that “sources” had “confirmed” that Ben Affleck was out, that the new Batman movie would be separate from Justice League, et al, and that kittens were being sacrificed Balam to ensure a good shoot.

In order; “sources” may or may not be some dude who once delivered donuts to the set, “confirmed” doesn’t seem to mean what they think it means, and the kittens are fine.

Brandon Davis, also over at ComicBook.com, fixes the internet.

First he deals with the director, Matt Reeves.

“When they approached me, what they said was, ‘Look, it’s a standalone. This isn’t part of the Extended Universe,'” Reeves said on The Business podcast back in July.

The quote resurfaced following the news of a standalone Joker film which would exist in an isolated universe, independent of the DC Extended Universe, with a new actor playing Batman’s greatest nemesis. The Batman movie, however, will not follow such a lead.

In my comments from a while back about not being part of the DCEU, I was talking about The Batman being a story specifically about Batman…

“In my comments from a while back about not being part of the DCEU, I was talking about The Batman being a story specifically about Batman,” Reeves wrote. “Not about the others in the Universe. That it wouldn’t be filled with cameos servicing other stories — that it would be a BATMAN story.”

The Batman connection to the greater DC Extended Universe is officially confirmed.

Basically, when all is said and done, he wants to do a movie based on the character of Batman. He doesn’t want a a bunch of super powered beings crashing his set every half hour. In other words, he doesn’t think he needs them. For the record, neither do I. Batman, and his regular rouges, are more than enough to make a great film.

As to the Ben Affleck rumors, he got the best quote you could get.

“Batman is the coolest f*cking part in any universe – DC, Marvel – it’s incredible, and I’m so thrilled to do it,” Affleck said. “I know there’s this misconception that because I didn’t direct it I wasn’t enthusiastic about it; it’s fucking amazing… and with Matt Reeves doing it, it’s like I’d be a fucking ape on the ground for Matt Reeves – never mind being Batman! It’s incredible! So I’m really blown away and excited and it’s a great time in the DC Universe. You’re going to see some stuff from Justice League that we’re really really proud of, and I’ll think you’ll see why I’m really excited to be Batman.”

That’s clear enough.

Now, in conclusion, when Wonder Woman came out the Alamo Drafthouse Theater chain in San Antonio held screenings just for women who gender identified as female. They were a huge success, and caused the internet to break with ALL CAPS screeds posted by angry man-children, and life went on.

Well, to quote a famous movie, THEEEEEEY’RE BAAAAAACK!

They will be doing a screening of the Steven King film, IT, for clowns only. Delaney Strunk, over at Buzzfeed, has the 411.

According to the theater’s site, participants should come “dressed as a clown in order to attend. Please arrive in your own Pennywise best and be ready to float with us.” It’s literally going to be a bunch of people dressed as scary clowns watching a movie about a very scary clown, and I swear I’ve had a nightmare just like this.

If you’ve yet to see the trailer, you are very lucky because this movie looks legitimately terrifying, but here it is if you’re curious or if you’re just a masochist who’s into this type of thing.

Oh and want to know the worst part about this ridiculous ordeal? The clown-only showing is already sold out. A full theater’s worth of people have already said, “You know what, I’m okay with dressing like a creepy-ass clown and watching a scary movie.”

While I have no problem with clowns, in the main, I still think this is something I would avoid. But boycotting it? Nope. Let folks have their fun I say.

Intelligence – X

August 11, 2017 by Bill McCormick

Monkey see, monkey do, monkey replace humans.
Lately I have been deluged with links to a site called Science Vibe. It purports to be a hip way to get people to understand science. It is anything but. It is exactly the problem with what people think is science. Vague generalizations, quotes taken wildly out of context, all festooned with a combination of fabrications and repeatedly debunked nonsense. One article quoted a scientist I know well. He had written a piece as an introduction to a brand of scientific study. It was well written, clear, and fun. At one point he said something like “Under no circumstances should anyone think blah blah blah.” Science Vibe quickly had an article stating “Prominent Scientist Claims Blah Blah Blah!!!!” I am not providing links here for two reasons. One, I loathe giving them any additional viewers. And, two, what I said about my buddy applies to several scientists and I see no reason to single him out. Nor would he want me to.

So let’s move on to some real science.

Back in 2015 I wrote about how several tribes of monkeys had entered the Stone Age.

According to a fascinating report from Collin Barras of the BBC, archeologists in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia, have been digging up crude stone tools that date back thousands of years — tools that were fashioned by non-human primates.

Which means something kind of extraordinary:

“The tools are crude. A chimpanzee or monkey stone hammer is hardly a work of art to rival the beauty of an ancient human hand axe. But that’s not the point. These primates have developed a culture that makes routine use of a stone-based technology. That means they have entered the Stone Age.”

That’s right: We now how pretty solid evidence to suggest that at least some chimps are now firmly in the Stone Age.

That’s both cool and frightening. But, for them to take the next steps, such as creating fire, domesticating animals, creating pottery, and so on, they need to learn non-linear thinking. They need to be able to extrapolate possibilities out of unknowns. Or, to put it in more basic terms, they need to be able to win at Rock, Paper, Scissors.

I know how stupid that sounds but I ask you to step back and think about it. Dr. Jie Gao certainly did.

Chimpanzees of all ages and all sexes can learn the simple circular relationship between the three different hand signals used in the well-known game rock-paper-scissors. Even though it might take them longer, they are indeed able to learn the game as well as a young child. Jie Gao of Kyoto University in Japan and Peking University in China is lead author of a study in the journal Primates, which is the official journal of the Japan Monkey Centre, and is published by Springer. The research compares the ability of chimpanzees and children to learn the rock-paper-scissors game.

Gao’s research team wanted to find out whether chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) can grasp extended patterns. They used the rock-paper-scissors game, a popular children’s game in which the hand signal for “paper” always beats “rock,” while “rock” trumps “scissors,” and “scissors” defeats “paper.” The relationship between the signals are non-linear and must be understood within the context of how the pairs are grouped. Learning such transverse patterns requires enhanced mental capacity and it is useful when forming complex relationship networks, solving problems, or updating what you already know about a subject.

Seven chimpanzees of different ages and sexes living in the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University were part of the experiment. They sat in a booth housing a computer-based touchscreen and were trained to choose the stronger of two options (based on the rules of the game) they saw on screen. They first learnt the paper-rock sequence, then the rock-scissors one and finally the scissors-paper combination. Once they knew how the pairs fitted together, all the different pairs were randomly presented to them on screen. Five of the seven chimpanzees completed the training after an average of 307 sessions.

The findings show that chimpanzees can learn the circular pattern at the heart of the game. However, it took them significantly longer to learn the third scissors-paper pair than it did to grasp the others, which indicates that they had difficulty finalizing the circular nature of the pattern.

There is one other point to be made here. Rock, Paper, Scissors requires a working knowledge of the three components and all the societal background each entails. There are no direct parallels in simian life. That means they learned something completely alien to them and then learned how to manipulate, and control, the variables.

Since we consider the typical four year old human to be sentient, if developing, there is no way we can deny the same status to these monkeys.

Since male fertility rates are rapidly plummeting in Western Civilization, I think it’s only polite that we help our replacements get a feel for things before we go.

Bust Out the Popcorn

WNC & Chill
WNC & Chill
No longer is the cinema a place to go chill with your buds for a couple of hours, yell at the blind bikini model not to open the basement door, and then go have a couple of beers. It has become a destination, an event. Each movie bigger, louder, more brash than its predecessors. Plots get short changed, actors become extras, and life muddles on. But then TV jumped in. All of the stuff on Netflix & HBO showed that people cared about using a brain cell or two as well as enjoying action. So movies are tilting back. while having mixed results with critics, films such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice have found legions of fans due to its dark themes and its ability to avoid the common tropes. This movie, and its predecessor, Man of Steel, showed some real world ramifications of the existence of superheroes. People die. Captain America: Civil War built its entire plot around that premise. While nowhere near as dark as its DC counterparts it still got people talking. Quick side conversation after any Marvel movie; why do they have churches when gods, literally, walk among the populace? Yeah, bring that one up at Sunday school. It’ll be fun.

So what do you have to look to for your intellectual, and prurient, gratification? Quite a bit actually.

Let’s take them in order.

LOGAN – March 3, 2017

Set in the future of 2024, Logan and Professor Charles Xavier must cope with the loss of the X-Men when a corporation lead by Nathaniel Essex is destroying the world leaving it to destruction, with Logan’s healing abilities slowly fading away and Xavier’s Alzheimer’s forcing him to forget. Logan must defeat Nathaniel Essex with the help of a young girl named Laura Kinney, a female clone of Wolverine.

That’s the official take. What this really is is a cinematic take on OLD MAN LOGAN, a highly respected, some say revered, comic book that featured Wolverine from the X-Men as an old man losing his powers. This in a world where mutants are all pretty much dead and gone thanks to government entities, and scared humans, hunting them down. This is about as dark as Marvel is going to get. As it stands this has an R rating, mostly for violence, profanity, and more violence. This will not be a film for the kiddies. It is, however, a fitting farewell to an iconic character and the actor who brought him to life for over a decade.

KONG: SKULL ISLAND – March 10, 2017

Kong: Skull Island reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific — as beautiful as it is treacherous — unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.

This is a move that no one asked for but many may be happy to discover. Word from those in the know is that it’s smarter, funnier, and darker than people may expect. Also, to a one, I’m told Kong is exactly what you want Kong to be. So that will be a nice change of pace.

POWER RANGERS – March 24, 2017

SABAN’S POWER RANGERS follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.

Okay, good news for adults, there is enough plot, and side jokes that kids will miss, that you should enjoy this. Better news is that there’s plenty of action and emo angst to justify aiming this at teens. That said, you can take the kids who are Power Ranger fans and they should enjoy it too. It humanizes the kids from Angel Grove while still keeping one foot in the wacky world that allows all this to work.

GHOST IN THE SHELL – March 31, 2017

A cyborg policewoman attempts to bring down a nefarious computer hacker.

Yep. That’s it. That’s the entire plot released by the studio. This being slightly less than the what the original 1995 cartoon presented with it being a take on “what is the essence of a soul?”, “what defines a human anyway?”, “what is better for humanity?”, and, of course, “what is the nature of sexuality?” The original movie left people talking for years. Many are still squabbling over meanings and nuance. Something tells me this version will not have the same effect on movie goers.

One thing we do know about it is that the nude scenes have been replaced with innuendo or silly unitards. That may be enough for rural American audiences but I’m not sure about anyone else. As a friend of mine opined, “It’s like the Lego version of Citizen Kane.”

Well, let’s not set the bar too high.

Oh, did I mention that many people are completely freaked out by the fact that a story about Japanese culture and how it deals with the future features Scarlett Johansson as the Japanese lead. Yeah, so there’s that. On the plus side, it looks pretty.

Next up, Jim Carrey as Malcolm X.

Please God let me be joking.

Anyway, that gets you through March. If you have any money left after that I’ll catch you up on some more.
