For Your Stay at Home Nerd

February 3, 2017 by Bill McCormick

All the gamers at WNC dress like this.
All the gamers at WNC dress like this.
Let’s start this with a letter from someone who listens to The Big Wake Up Call.

Yo Bill, the missus and I like listening to you talk about the super hero movies and stuff but were wondering what else we can watch. We don’t go to the movies much cause of the money but we do like some of the TV stuff you mentioned. She and our daughter like Supergirl and all that stuff and we both liked Luke Cage and the rest when the little one goes to bed. Well, she ain’t that little no more. Graduating into high school this year. Don’t you worry though. I got my double aught polished for when boys start dropping by.

LOL

Anyway, we were hoping you could tell us about some more stuff we can watch at home so we can save a buck and still be entertained. You and Darren keep up the good work. We’ll wait for your reply.

Karl S. & Fam

There are three people who call me Dave. Six regular emailers call me Mike. Hopefully Ryan can live with one calling him Darren.

That quibble aside there is a whole bunch of stuff headed our way so now’s as good a time as any to share them with you.

The Flash and Supergirl have announced they’ll be doing a two-part musical episode, starting March 21st, featuring the Music Meister as the villain. What made me take notice of this is the fact that Neil Patrick-Harris did the voice of the character in the cartoon and would be perfect in the live action version. Whether or not this will happen is a tightly kept secret. But, yes, the link attached to his name will take you to a recent interview where he says he doesn’t have a clue about any of this and then lets you watch him in action in Batman: Brave and the Bold. But that isn’t all that’s happening on your TV this year. Below is a list of new shows you can watch when you’re not watching all the old ones you’re addicted to. Bonus, since you can watch them at home you can dress just like the World News Center’s resident gamer in the pic above.

Powerless Season 1

They’re the quirky staff of an insurance company filing claims against the extraordinary collateral damage inflicted by super-humans. Hilarity, and destruction, ensue.

ABC
Episodes: 10
Starring: Vanessa Hudgens, Danny Pudi, Alan Tudyk, and Atlin Mitchell

LEGION Season 1

David Haller is an Omega-level mutant, and son of renowned X-Men leader, Professor Charles Xavier. Or, he’s a complete nutter and everything I just said (typed) is a manufactured delusion.

Premier Date: February 8th, 2017
Time:
Unknown
Network:
FX
Episodes: Unknown. Presumably more than 5 and less than 1,700.
Starring: Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Jean Smart, Aubrey Plaza, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, Katie Aselton, and Bill Irwin

Marvel’s Iron Fist Season 1

Danny Rand punches the heart of a dragon with his kung-fu fury.

Premier Date: March 17th, 2017
Network: Netflix
Episodes: 13
Starring: Finn Jones as Daniel Rand/Iron Fist

Preacher Season 2

The search for God begins! Oh, and…look out for the Saint of Killers!

Premier Date: 2017
Network:
AMC
Episodes: 13
Starring: Dominic Cooper as Jessie Custer

Defenders Season 1

Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist team up to beat the hell out of New York…I mean, Sigourney Weaver!

Premier Date: 2017
Network:
Netflix
Episodes: 8
Starring: Charlie Cox, Mike Colter, Krysten Ritter, Finn Jones, Scott Glenn, Rosario Dawson, Simone Missick, and Sigourney Weaver.

Let’s look at what we’re getting.

Powerless. This is a great idea. One full of comedic possibilities and pathos unimagined. Unfortunately it’s on NBC, the network that screwed the pooch, it’s neighbor’s cat, and a variety of farm animals in Utah, when it came to Heroes. The first season was captivating and then corporate wonks stepped in and entropy was rampant. My guess is we get one season worth talking about and then we beg for merciful death.

Legion. I really like the premise. Is it all a dream, a dream being manipulated by others, or is this dude the real deal? For now let’s focus on the main plot; this is Professor X’s bastard and he has powers others can’t even pronounce, let alone define. In this case it appears he can, initially with help, skip back and forth between parallel dimensions. Since it’s on FX I expect it to be given a chance to find its way.

Iron Fist. The Marvel/Netflix combo has batted .1000 so far. Iron Fist, like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, opens up a world filled with disturbing possibilities. The lead character is filled with paranoia, barely measurable physical powers, and the desire to “do good.” That last part also drives the Punisher. Yeah, that’s a fan’s “wish trailer” but it’s a good look at the character and what Iron Fist may deem as morally acceptable. Which is frightening when you consider he can punch through a bank vault.

The Preacher. AMC’s take on the comic book classic has been spot on thus far. It has been as Old Testament as you can get without actually bringing back the ghost of Sampson or someone like him. One messed up human being on a mission from God that is very different than the Blues Brothers famous mission. Basically, if God doesn’t want his help he’s going to kick the shit out of God. Killing God is on the table. If you’ve missed it this is definitely worth binge watching.

Defenders. Daredevil + Jessica Jones + Luke Cage + Iron Fist = God Only Knows. Only two, Daredevil & Luke Cage, have a defined ethos against killing. When all four band together to protect their homes against threats, both Avengers’ related and not, morals are off the table. Besides being the obvious culmination of the shows dedicated to the previously named characters, this could be something worthy of college dissertations.

Or not.

We’ll find out.
