Healthier Friedless Chicken

Once coated, stare at the chicken for about 30 seconds, but do not eat just yet!

The taste of fried chicken is the best, but the calories and the fat grams are not worth it...or is it?  Regardless if the Colonel has removed the word "fried" from his tasty buckets of chicken, that stuff is not any healthier.   So here's a healthier idea, and it's cheap too.  Make a healthier friedless chicken using just a few ingredients. Click on the photos to enlarge! You'll need the following: 2 skinless-boneless chicken breasts 2 cups plain non-fat yogurt 1 cup of crushed cornflakes cereal Add Spice if desired Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F Dip each chicken breasts in yogurt, until completely coated. The Jerry Springer Annual Farewell Season

Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!

Now that Oprah Winfrey has said her goodbyes and is packing up for Los Angeles, we no longer have a national broadcast talk show coming from Chicago.  Phil Donahue may have been the first one, but then there was Jenny Jones, Jerry Springer and even Danny Bonaduce had a show...but wait....Jerry is still around...he just left Chicago for a tax-break in Stamford, Connecticut.  Now in his 20th year, he is as irrelevant as he ever was.  You can catch him every morning at 3 am on WCIU-TV, The U, Channel 26.  (Another broadcast airs at 11 am, but unless you have a job, that is too early to watch it then) Years ago, I got in on the fun and … [Read more...]

New Video of DATAROCK – LOLLAPALOOZA CHILE

Datarock 1

One of my favorite acts over the past several years is Norway's Datarock. Easily one of the most quirky and infectious electro-rock groups out there, I first was bitten by their bug after their appearance at the 2006 edition of the Iceland Airwaves festival. This is one of those groups that you've likely heard many more times than you might think.  Datarock tunes have been featured in commercial spots for Coca-Cola and iPod Nano, have also been heard on Jersey Shore, and have been included on several top tier video games. Recently, they were part of the inaugural Lollapalooza Chile, which went down in Santiago in early April, … [Read more...]

New Music from TWILIGHT SINGERS: Tonight @ Metro

twilight singers 1

When 90s alt-rock outfit The Afghan Whigs split in 2001, front man Greg Dulli went to work on a solo career and on making what had been his side project, The Twilight Singers, into his main endeavor. The fifth Twilight Singers full length album Dynamite Steps came out in February on Subpop, and is a collection of solid, gritty, brooding rock that you can hear live Tuesday at Metro. Sometimes it's bright and cheerful stuff that makes you snap your fingers as you walk down the sidewalk or drive along the road...but other times you need something that just plain has some coarseness and attitude to it. This new Twilight Singers … [Read more...]

UK Indie Rock from MAZES

A Thousand Heys

This group has been stuck in my head for the past couple of days after I got a taste of their new debut record. They’re Mazes, a 4-piece formed in Manchester, UK who are now kicking it in London. They’re drawing big comparisons to British contemporaries Yuck (who are playing a couple of sold out gigs at Lincoln Hall this week, plus Pitchfork Festival), putting them as the next in line of guitar-based English exports. It’s extremely catchy and full of hooks, and I think you’ll dig it if you’re a fan of 90’s alt-rock like Pavement, or the likes of Sloan or Guided By Voices. Adding to the story behind this music on the … [Read more...]

Cirque Eloize ID

If anyone knows me, they know when I love something, I *LOVE* it.  And one of the fun things in life that I have just fallen in love when Cirque de Soleil is involved.  Any time there's one in town, I jump at the chance to go and see it and that goes for anything that's Cirque-related as well.  So when my producer asked if I wanted to go and see the Cirque Eloize ID show that's currently playing at the Cadillac Theatre, I quickly told my girlfriends that they now had an extra Cubs ticket for the game that night!  I didn't know what to expect because this was not your usual Cirque de Soleil experience, but that just added to my … [Read more...]

Sunshine and Happiness

TSunshineState-T

As my more astute readers will know I have, on occasion, written about Florida, the Sunshine State. The State that's given the world the rabidly homophobic Anita Bryant, celebrates a virulent anti-Semite with an amusement park and actually required a law to prevent people from molesting trash cans. Granted, it also gave us Dave Barry, but that almost seems to be an accident of birth by now. Florida is, without a doubt, a beautiful state with glorious coastlines and stunning wild life. And I'm not just talking about the mutant cockroaches. In fact, in many ways it would be idyllic if it weren't for the people who live there. While an … [Read more...]

Mrs. God

I'm not one of those people who confuse God with religion. The former is, I believe, the creator of all things and therefore due our worship and service. The latter is man's, often conflicted, interpretation of God's intent. Really complex commands such as "Thou shalt not kill" or "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife" get parsed and altered until some wiggle room is found. And each religion believes that the wiggle room it decreed is the only wiggle room allowed. Interfaith conversations about the aforesaid wiggle room can often get heated and have led to prejudice and wars. Which would seem counter to God's original edicts, but who am I … [Read more...]

Odd Couples

Love is a many splintered thing. I know that's not the actual quote, but it does seem more accurate when you think about it. I, for one, am 0 for 2 in the marriage department. Others I know aren't even that lucky. Some are in marriages of convenience or relationships that defy all logic, simply clinging to someone so they won't have to die alone. In that regard I count myself lucky. Even without a wife I have some people whom I'm very close to and whom I'm proud to count as friends. And if they don't share my bed they do share my life. I need never worry about being totally alone. If worst comes to worse, I still have my cats and they seem … [Read more...]

Food For Thought

If you're like me, and it appears that there may be a few freaks out there who fit that description, you like food. In an earlier incarnation of Nude Hippo I was their TV chef. It was kind of like commando cooking since I never was sure what ingredients would actually be there when I showed up. One night the menu called for chicken and I was presented with 5 quarts of ice cream. It was kind of odd. Nevertheless, I muddled through. As time went on I began collecting recipes and eventually even created a cookbook that I gave away to anyone who wanted it. Go ahead and click the link and you can have a copy too. It's got a lot of guest recipes … [Read more...]
